Composing in the Wilderness: A New Workshop at Denali National Park and Preserve (Alaska, USA) – July 20 - 27, 2012
ADVANCE ANNOUNCEMENT (more details in coming weeks)

For centuries, composers have looked to nature for inspiration. With adventurer-composer Stephen Lias and National Park Service soundscape scientist Davyd Betchkal, you’ll spend four days exploring the stunning beauty of Denali’s wilderness, learning how the life of the region is reflected in the sounds you hear, and developing your creative skills through translating these ideas into original chamber music. Following our wilderness experience in Denali we will return to Fairbanks to work with top performers from the faculty of the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival on our music pieces. A public performance will take place as part of the Arts Festival. Encapsulating inspiration, composition, rehearsal, and performance into a single week, this field seminar is sure to be an intensive and exhilarating creative experience. Participants should be trained composers (college students or professionals) with experience preparing their own manuscripts and writing chamber music for various instruments. This course kicks off the first-ever Denali Music Festival with a performance on July 21st.

The Instructor and Partner Organizations
Composer Stephen Lias has been Artist-in-Residence at both Rocky Mountain and Gates of the Arctic National Parks. His compositions have been performed throughout the world including recent premieres of "Mount Rainier Search and Rescue" in Taiwan, "Kings Canyon" in Australia, and "Denali" in Texas. "The Timberline Sonata" was featured in the Fall issue of National Parks Magazine. His passion for the outdoors, along with his engaging teaching style, makes him an ideal facilitator for this unusual seminar.
This course and the performances are a joint effort of Denali National Park and Preserve, the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, Denali Arts & Humanities Alliance, and Alaska Geographic. The Murie Science and Learning Center is a cooperative of partners dedicated to disseminating park science through compelling education programs like this. This workshop will be conducted in English.

This seminar has a maximum enrollment of nine composers.

Times and Location:
Participants will arrive at the Fairbanks International Airport on July 20th. Transportation and lodging will be provided through the night of July 27th with departure on July 28th. Those who wish to remain to attend additional concerts at the festival may do so at their own expense.

Lodging and Meals:
The in-park portion of this seminar is based out of the Murie Science and Learning Center Field Camp, located 29 miles inside Denali National Park along the Teklanika River. The Field Camp includes rustic tent cabins and a common dining tent. Family-style meals are simple and healthy. It is important that all participants are comfortable "roughing it" in close quarters for a few days. Please carefully review the information about the accommodations provided HERE. Note that there is no electricity available at the field camp. Participants should be prepared to compose the old-fashioned way (imagination, pencil, and staff paper). While in Fairbanks, dormitory housing will be provided on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, but participants will be responsible for their own meals.

Hiking Distances and Physical Fitness:
Field Seminars are active learning experiences. Participants must be capable walkers, in good health, and equipped for sudden changes in weather. This course includes up to two miles of hiking and/or 500 foot elevation gain per day, over uneven terrain.

Cost and Registration:
Exact cost and online registration for this course will be available soon. If you are interested in attending, please contact Stephen Lias directly at: steve @ stephenlias.com and he will provide you with more details as they become available. Registration will not include the cost of airfare.

COMUNICAT - București, 2.03.2012
Adrian Leonard Mociulschi, compozitor (secretariat @ mociulschi.ro)

Albumul New Polish Music for Choir (Musica Sacra Edition)

Votul are loc în două etape.

'Living Music'
Announcing the 2010 ISCM World New Music Days festival in Sydney

Sydney’s hosting of the ISCM World New Music Days festival from 30 April to 9 May heralds the first time in the 88-year history of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) that the prestigious event will be held in the southern hemisphere. It will also be the largest festival of contemporary music ever held in Australia.

Since the ISCM’s founding in 1922, ISCM festivals have included the world premieres of works by a diverse range of important composers, many of which have become standard repertoire, for example Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, and Ravel’s Piano Concerto for Left Hand. Australian works have regularly featured in the festival since 1938 in London, when Peggy Glanville Hicks’ Choral Suite was performed on a program which included Britten’s Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge, and Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos, Percussion and Celesta.

In putting together the programme for this festival, more than 700 works from 52 countries were assessed, with over 82 works being selected. These reflect a broad spectrum of innovative musical practice, covering traditional chamber groups and choirs to cutting edge multimedia and sound installations. Music has been sourced from Australasia and Asia; Western and Eastern Europe; North, South and Central America, and South Africa.

There will be performances by some of Australia’s top music ensembles, from established professionals such as the Goldner String Quartet, The Song Company and Topology through to emerging artists including the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Big Band, Sydney Symphony Fellowship and the Sydney Children’s Choir. Fresh from their recent success at the Sydney Festival, outstanding Sydney-based Ensemble Offspring will hold pride of place within the 2010 ISCM World New Music Days. They will present three performances, including a breakthrough concert of music by young composers from Australia, Greece, Sweden, South Africa and Russia.

In addition to the influx of international composers and delegates, we also welcome a strong international performing presence to the 2010 ISCM World New Music Days. The Spectra Ensemble from Belgium will perform at the Campbelltown Arts Centre; and the NZTrio will perform at the Eugene Goossens Hall (ABC Ultimo Centre) in Sydney. Groundbreaking composer Annea Lockwood (US/NZ) of Piano Burning fame will be in residence at the Campbelltown Arts Centre to install some of her piano works and to showcase a recent video work, Bow Falls.

Notable in the 2010 ISCM World New Music Days is the inclusion of a special category of radiophonic works – 14 works that have been specifically written for radio broadcast. Composers in this category are from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Turkey and Portugal. Our media partner, ABC Classic FM, will be presenting these and other works recorded during the festival throughout Australia, as well as streamed via the web.

UUNO KLAMI COMPOSITION COMPETITION AROUSES INTERNATIONAL INTEREST

The II International Uuno Klami Composition Competition carries the name of one of the most popular Finnish composers, Uuno Klami. The aim of the competition is to produce good new repertoire for a small orchestra of sinfonietta type. The announcement of the competition took place in January 2008 and the competition has aroused international interest among compos-ers. The Competition Office has received several inquiries from composers around Europe and the first entry arrived in May. The distinguished jury and the value of the prizes are among the reasons why the competition has aroused so much interest.

Entries must reach the Competition Office by 1 December 2008 at the latest. At the first assessment stage at the beginning of 2009 the jury will choose from three to five composi-tions for performance in the finals. The competition jury consists of four distinguished members of the international classical music community: composer Kalevi Aho (Chairman, Finland), composer Magnus Lindberg (Finland), composer Anders Eliasson (Sweden) and conductor Yasuo Shinozaki (Japan/UK).

The II International Uuno Klami Composition Competition is a unique showcase for new Euro-pean music. It will culminate in finals concerts to be held in Kymenlaakso, the region of South-east Finland where Uuno Klami was born, performed by the Kymi Sinfonietta in Sep-tember 2009. The compositions will be premiered in the city of Kouvola on Friday 18 September 2009 and in the city of Kotka on Saturday 19 September 2009. The jury will not place the works in any order of merit until they have been performed at both the rehearsals and the finals concerts. The results and the winners will be announced after the Kotka finals concert on 19 September 2009. Tickets for the finals concerts will go on sale in January 2009.

This professional composition competition of international standard has received positive atten-tion among international companies operating in the Kymenlaakso region of Southeast Finland and from Finnish organisations sponsoring culture. Significant support has been provided by the logistics companies Port of Kotka and Innorail Kouvola. 4TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS
DUNDAGA CASTLE, LATVIA AUGUST 10 – 18, 2008

From August 10 till 18, 2008 in the historical castle of Dundaga, the 4th International Workshop for young composers will take place. The project has already gained a considerable international reputation, and it is the only workshop of its kind in the Baltic region. During three previous Workshops, some 50 participants from nine countries have particpated. They have developed their abilities with 12 prominent composers from seven countries. Those who have already been in the small, eastern Latvian town of Dundaga, remember the time of the workshop as full of creative activities, fresh air and romantic country atmosphere. You can get everything in Dundaga except for the daily grind, oppressive city heat and plenty of modern technologies. The Workshop for young composers in Dundaga is a chance to seek inspiration in silence and simplicity under the guidance of excellent composers. It is a chance to hear your own music and that of other composers, and to breathe in deeply.

ACTUAL
The theme of 4th International Workshop for young composers is Universe and labyrinths of possibilities for wind instruments in contemporary music

LECTURERS OF THE WORKSHOP
Olga Neuwirth – Austria...more

Olga Neuwirth (1968). One of the most distinguished contemporary European composers, she studied with Erich Urbaner in Vienna, Elinor Armer and Tristan Murail in San Francisco and Paris. Neuwirth has worked at the IRCAM institute in Paris. She is also a Berlin DAAD stipendiary, has received the Hindemith prize and the promotional prize of the Ernst von Siemens foundation, the Ernst Krenek prize. Neuwirthwas presented with two portrait concerts at the prestigious Salzburg festival. Together with Pierre Boulez, she was the resident composer of the Lucerne festival. Boulez conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in 2000, when it performed her piece Clinamen/Nodus, which was also on the program during its world tour. In 2006, Olga Neuwirthwas elected a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. Her music is full of vital, contemporary colours, unexpected plot changes and original philosophy....close
Yannis Kyriakides – Russia ...more
Yannis Kyriakides (1969) Born in Cyprus currently living in the Netherlands, Yannis Kyriakides has studied with Louis Andriessen in the Hague. In 2000 he received the prestigious Gaudeamus music prize, in 2006 – the honorary award of Prix Ars Electronica. The composer has co-operated with important contemporary music ensembles, among them Icebreaker, ASKO, Ensemble Integrales, and London Sinfonietta. Within the scope of his interests, an essential part is occupied by the interaction of acoustic and electronic music, which produces and seeks new forms and hybrids of media. Very often Kyriakides unites seemingly incompatible sources of sounds thus broadening the audience’s experience of space and time....close
Vladimir Tarnopolski – Cyprus/ The Netherlands ...more
Vladimir Tarnopolski (1955) Studied in Moscow with Nikolai Sidelnikov and Edison Denisov. Tarnopoļski’s music has been performed in almost all of the biggest European music festivals, such as Berliner Festwochen, Wien Modern, Holland Festival, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, The Schleswig-Holstein Musikfest, Tage fur Neue Musik Zurich, Warsaw Autumn. Among the performers of his music are the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble InterContemporain etc. Tarnopolski’s music can be regarded from two aspects – on the one hand, it is subject to carefully weighed-out construction while seeking for new coherence in music between consonance and dissonance, sound and noise, harmony and tone, electronic and acoustic. On the other hand, this music embodies refined postmodern histrionics together with subtle irony or surreal grotesque. ...close

To participate in the workshop, You have to compose ¾ of a piece for a classical wind instrument quintet (fl, ob, cl, fg, cor).

The residing group of the workshop will be the woodwind quintet Quintus Anima – an ensemble of young, talented and internationally known soloists. The range of interests of the ensemble goes beyond classical and romantic music: The technical and creative ambitions of the ensemble consistently tend towards contemporary music. The musicians will stay at Dundaga for most of the duration of the workshop and will be open to consultations all day long.

The piece should involve the full instrumentation of the quintet. Solo pieces or pieces for part of instruments will not be accepted. The submitted score fragment must not exceed 5 minutes (the total length of a piece should be no more than 7 minutes).

Fifteen active participants of the workshop will be selected according to the results of the competition, after evaluation of the submitted material.

At the end of the workshop, the lecturers will choose the ten best pieces for the final concert.

Olga Neuwirth – Austria
Vladimir Tarnopolski – Russia
Yannis Kyriakides – Cyprus/ The Netherlands

The residing group of the workshop will be the woodwind quintet Quintus Anima – an ensemble of young, talented and internationally known soloists. The range of interesrs of the ensemble goes beyond classical and romantic music: The technical and creative ambitions of the ensemble consistently tend towards contemporary music.

LECTURERS

Yannis Kyriakides (1969)

Born in Cyprus currently living in the Netherlands, Yannis Kyriakides has studied with Louis Andriessen in the Hague. Very often Kyriakides unites seemingly incompatible sources of sounds thus broadening the audience’s experience of space and time.

Olga Neuwirth (1968)
Her music is full of vital, contemporary colours, unexpected plot changes and original philosophy.

Vladimir Tarnopolski (1955)
Studied in Moscow with Nikolai Sidelnikov and Edison Denisov.

PROCESS

During the nine days of the workshop every participant will attend private consultations with all lecturers, as well as present his/her music, take part in rehearsals, seminars and discussions. Each lecturer will read two lectures on current issues of contemporary music. The theme of the workshop is only the axis around which different discourses concentrate. The official theme is not obligatory, and participants are given maximal creative freedom. During the workshop all conditions for creative, individual work will be provided. The historical building of Dundaga Castle combines a music school with facilties for creative work and a simple student hostel, in which participants will be accommodated.

CONCERTS AND FREE TIME

During the workshop there will be two concerts performed. Compositions of the workshop lecturers will be performed by an ensemble of the best Latvian contemporary music soloists, and the wind quintet Quintus Anima will render premieres of participants’ pieces. In free time all the participants are invited to offer their musical performances, lectures and other kinds of creative activities. The quiet and inspiring environment of the castle is perfectly suitable for both active and passive rest and tasty entertainment. Dundaga is located at a distance of about twenty kilometres from the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga.
