Comments on Sorin LERESCU

'The composer you are going to discover on this record is, in his colleagues' unanimous opinion, in the front line of present-day prospective Romanian music. He owes his position to his unfailing capacity for synthesizing in a personal, seductive language everything of importance that has been accumulated in the music of the last few decades, as well as to the simplicity of his vocabulary and the clarity of his structural ideas achieved through a relentless polishing of the sound matter. (...) The Second Symphony reveals a highly developed musical thinking. Sorin Lerescu sets out to solve the thorny difficulties posed by the orchestral writing, arising from the explorations that have been made in the latter half of this century: the outsized sonic volumes (textures), the spatial shift of the polyphonic or heterophonic combinations, the insertion of the 'chamber' fragments (sections) and modules of a discourse which is, in fact, monolithic. The Second Symphony by Sorin Lerescu is undoubtedly an outstanding success of present-day Romanian symphonic literature'.
Fred Popovici.
- In: Sorin Lerescu - L.P. / Bucureşti: ELECTRECORD ST-ECE 03790, 1991

The Romanians of the Day is a concert that reflects a vital relationship between composers of Victoria and Romania. In 2000 the Melbourne Composers League was given the opportunity by Dr Sorin Lerescu to present the first all-Australian concert in Romania by the Ensemble Traiect. Featuring eight Australian composers, the concert was held as part of the Meetings of New Music in 2000 in Braila, by the Danube delta near the Black Sea. The town is of no small significance, being where Xenakis lived until the age of sixteen, in a beautiful home by shady trees near the fast flowing Danube River. Here one understands that Xenakis, although of Greek parentage absorbed the musical culture of the Romanians, and particularly their distinctive vitality that often endows their music with great rhythmic energy. The Festival was held only a short a shortwalk from Xenakis's childhood home. Joel Crotty accompanied Eve Duncan on this trip and he returned to Braila in 2001 with Australian clarinettist Peter Handsworth to present a concert of Australian and Romanian clarinet works. The concert acknowledges the incredible generosity of Dr Sorin Lerescu, leader ofthe Ensemble Traiect and his sincere interest in Australian music.
Eve Duncan - In: CD The Romanians of the Day, Foreword, March 2002

The 14th International New Music Week will commence on 23rd May and continue through until 30th May. This year the festival director is Dr. Sorin Lerescu, and he has created an interesting mix of concerts ranging from traditional orchestral affairs through to jazz and experimental multimedia performances. The music will resonate in a number of venues around Bucharest including the University of Music, Romanian Radio, Cantacuzino Palace, and the National Opera Theatre. Theatre works by George Balint and Dan Dediu will nestle alongside the more intimate portrait events featuring work by the giants of Romanian music including Myriam Marbe, Tiberiu Olah, Two of Bucharest's leading orchestras - the Chamber Radio Orchestra and National Radio Orchestra - have once again been commissioned to perform with soloists Daniel Keintzy (saxophone) and Peter Handsworth (clarinet). Music ensembles from abroad such as Caput (Iceland), Leipziger Streichquartett (Germany) and Musica Danubiana (Slovenia) have been engaged to perform, and their acceptance of Lerescu's invitation demonstrates, once again, the importance of this festival with new music performers across Europe. Not only does the festival boost Bucharest's local economy with the arrival of performers and composers from across the globe but also the event enables constructive relationships to be formed between Romanians and performers from abroad. One such relationship has been between clarinettist Peter Handsworth, who is currently living in Melbourne, and composers Lerescu and Maia Ciobanu. Some years ago Lerescu wrote a small solo clarinet work for Handsworth which has been performed in Australia
on a number of occasions. (...)
