STUDIES AND RESEARCHES
OF ANCIENT HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY
(SCIVA)
Over its 45 years of continuous issuing, our review, more than any other
relevant publication, has been the faithful mirror of the trends in Romanian
during the post-war period. In the first 35 years (1950 - 1984), the
review "Studies and Researches of Ancient History" ((SCIV), that became
in 1974 "Studies and Researches of Ancient History and Archaeology"
(SCIVA), published about 21,000 pages, and 1,982 titles. The general table
of contents accompanied by an index of authors, localities, themes and
chronology, was published in SCIVA 36, 1985, 2.
It includes numerous synthesis studies, discussions and excavation
reports, material publications, reviews, references, chronicles, etc. of
an undeniable value, or at least usefulness. The authors include many
names of high prestige in Romanian archaeology; first of all, the
pre-war generation: R. Vulpe, I. Nestor, Vl. Dumitrescu, Gh. Stefan, D.
Popescu, Gr. Florescu, D. M. Pippidi, C. S. Nicolaescu-Plopsor, D.
Berciu, D. Tudor, Em. Condurachi.
In time, they were joined by the representatives of the generations
educated in post-war years under the precarious, essentially unfavourable,
conditions of the communist regime. Once that regime disappeared, and
censorship and the control over science were abolished, we can expect
real progress in Romanian archaeology. However, that requires a high
exigence as to the contents and presentation of the review.
